What is the function of a motorcycle clutch? How should it be operated? Can it be used for coasting by simply holding it?
Release date:2026.02.02

Others can start at the 5th or 6th gear, but you can only stay at the 1st gear. This difference is not only due to the different power of the vehicle, but more importantly, it is related to the operation skills. To truly understand the inner workings, you must have a thorough knowledge of the clutch of the motorcycle.

1.Classification of Clutches

The clutches of motorcycles are currently classified into two main types: manual and automatic. The manual clutches can be further distinguished as ordinary clutches and sliding clutches; while the automatic clutches are divided into centrifugal and electronic types.

Among them, centrifugal automatic clutches are mainly used in scooters and sidecars; electronic automatic clutches are a brand-new technology, mainly applied to sidecar-type vehicles. With its assistance, the conventional gear transmission system can achieve automatic transmission effect. However, most sidecar-type motorcycles are still using manual clutches.

2. Composition of the Clutch

Any motorcycle will have a clutch. However, in different models, its form of existence may vary slightly, and thus there will be different component structures.

Generally speaking, the clutch of a motorcycle is mainly composed of a large drum, a small drum, friction plates, pressure plates, push rods, etc. However, on a scooter CVT transmission, it is called the bowl gear and the shoe block.

Among them, the friction plates are vulnerable components. If the operation is improper, they can easily be damaged. Excessively worn clutch friction plates will cause the vehicle's power to decrease or even completely lose it. Therefore, do not operate in violation of regulations.

3. The Function of the Clutch

From my personal perspective, the clutch is essentially a "buffer" in the process of power transmission. With the presence of this component, both motorcycles and cars can achieve smooth starting and smooth gear shifting.

In other words, the clutch of a motorcycle has the functions of cutting off and transmitting power. Although the working principles of different types of clutches vary slightly, they are essentially the link between the internal combustion engine and the gearbox. Even if it does not amplify the power, it will still affect the efficiency of power transmission.

4. How to operate properly

The operation of the clutch varies in different situations. When starting, the approach should be "quickly pull, slowly release, and hold steady". During this process, we must identify the critical point of power transmission for the vehicle.

If you feel that the vehicle starts to shake, it basically means that the power transmission has begun. At this point, slow down while firmly holding the clutch handle. The vehicle will be able to start smoothly, and then you can gently apply the throttle to resume normal driving.

During the gear shifting process, the key point is "speed". Whether it's depressing or releasing the clutch, it must be done quickly without any hesitation. At the same time, the throttle should be completely shut off. By doing so, your gear shifting experience will be extremely smooth.

5. Can you hold on and glide?

During the use of motorcycles, the phenomenon of treating the clutch as the transmission is very common. Especially under the influence of the international six-speed gearbox, many experienced drivers like to use the clutch to coast downhill. However, in fact, this operation is incorrect. It not only poses safety risks but also accelerates the wear of the friction plates.

However, in congested traffic or under special circumstances, it is sometimes possible to briefly shift into neutral and coast for a short period of time. But there are still some tricks to follow. The accelerator must be completely depressed, and the idle speed should not be too high. Otherwise, it will also cause damage to the clutch.

In summary, the clutch is an important component in the power transmission process. Its position is quite special, which imposes certain requirements on the rider's technique. Therefore, we must operate it properly. We should not treat it as a transmission device, nor should we grip the handlebars tightly and rush the accelerator. Instead, we should operate it reasonably based on its characteristics. Only in this way can your riding safety and shifting experience be guaranteed.
