How to clean up the carbon accumulation in motorcycle engine?
Release date:2020.04.21

There is a carbon buildup in the engine

The engine is powered by a downward-moving piston that sucks a mixture of petrol and air into the cylinder. The upward-moving piston compresses the gas into a highly flammable gas.

The mixture, the source of power, must pass through the intake valve to enter the combustion chamber. A small part of the gasoline will adhere to the intake valve. In case of the high temperature of the engine, the hydrocarbon, paraffin, and gelatin that cannot be burned completely in the gasoline will be burned into the rubberized carbon.

The way to clean up carbon accumulation in motorcycle engines is down, down, down

Operating clearance

1, the oil line, carburetor, combustion chamber, valve seat joint surface and exhaust channel of the sediment, carbon, gum can be used to clean the fuel system cleaner.

Specific usage, add the right amount of cleaning agent in the gasoline tank, after full mixing can be put into use, its proportion is about 2% of the fuel capacity (generally 5000 ~ 10000 km should be cleared).

2. Carbon accumulation in the engine and oil channel.

Engine internal cleaning agent can be added to the crankcase at 5% of the oil capacity. After driving for 1 hour, clean the exhaust with the dirty oil under the condition of the engine (usually 15000 ~ 20000 km should be cleared once).

Mechanical clearance

This is a way of removing carbon deposits with a scraper. Can use scraper, screwdriver, old saw blade and bamboo skewer type point to remove carbon. For the accumulation of carbon in the cylinder head combustion chamber, the saw blade with a semicircular front end can be used to remove the sawtooth.

The accumulation of carbon on the cylinder body exhaust can be used for bamboo skewer-type tip or screwdriver removal, but it should be noted that do not touch the cylinder wall. The carbon accumulation in piston ring groove can be broken by the same type of piston ring scraping.

Be careful not to scratch the piston ring notches during operation.

After carbon accumulation is cleared, the scratch on piston ring groove can be worn off with metallograph sandpaper, last with kerosene or gasoline (had better use kerosene, because it is permeable strong) clean all parts and components after reassembling.

Chemical clearance

Relatively large parts can be soaked with trichloroethylene for ten minutes and then clean, because trichloroethylene can dissolve the accumulation of colloid and asphalt and other viscous substances, can make the remaining carbonaceous compounds and metal compounds become brittle and easy to remove.

Smaller parts can be immersed in chemical washing solution of 80℃ ~ 95℃ for 2 ~ 3 hours. After softening, they are moved to hot water to remove residual carbon accumulation with a brush, and finally dried with compressed air. For castings and steel parts, apply oil to the surface of the parts after removing carbon deposits and cleaning to prevent corrosion.

It must be emphasized that because caustic soda (NaOH) has a corrosive effect on aluminum, the washing solution containing caustic sodium must not be used to clean aluminum machinery.

As the current majority of motorcycle engine cylinder head are made of aluminum alloy material, we hope to be treated carefully, not at will, so as not to bring unintended consequences.
